How Great Is Thy Name!
==================
"Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12). What name? Jesus. "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;" (Philippians 2:9,10).
We are given instructions to rely upon the name of Jesus in all we say and do. "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus" (Colossians 3:17). For the name of Jesus to be effective we must have faith in His name (Acts 3:16). We must have faith in the One represented by that name (Acts 19:13-17). The name of Jesus represents God's presence, power, and work. See Matt. 11:20-24. Are we children of obedience? "..bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled" (2 Cor. 10:5,6). "For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience." (Col. 3:9).
Jesus says: "If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also: and from henceforth ye know Him, and have seen Him." (John 14:7). "He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father" (vs 9). "...believe Me for the very works sake." (vs 11).
The name of Jesus is the name of God that He promised to reveal when He said, "Therefore my people shall know My name" (Isaiah 52:6). "And the LORD shall be King over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and His name one." (Zechariah 14:9). All the names of God will be included in One name.
God demands fear (reverence, respect) for His name (Deuteronomy 28:58,59). He commands man not to take His name in vain (Exodus 20:7). God warns His people not to forget His name (Psalm 44:20-21; Jeremiah 23:25-27). God promises a blessing for those who know His name (Psalm 91:14-16). There is a blessing for those who think upon His name (Malachi 3:16).
"What is His Name, and what is his Son's name, if thou canst tell?" (Proverbs 30:4). Zechariah prophesied "Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended?"... "in that day shall there be one LORD, and His Name one" (Zechariah 14:9). "The LORD our God is one LORD:" (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Jesus means: Jehovah-Saviour, Jehovah our Salvation, or Jehovah is Salvation. The angel said, "And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS: for He shall save His People from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). Jesus is the same as Hoshea (Hebrew) in Numbers 13:6, with Jah prefixed = God [our] Saviour, or God Who [is] salvation. In Deut. 32:44 we see the name Hoshea = saviour, or salvation. Je prefixed = he by whom Jehovah will save. Jehoshua, sometimes Jeshua (Neh. 8:17) in Greek = Jesus. Hoshea = the old spelling of Joshua, later as Jeshua (Ezra 2:2) in Greek = Jesus.
God said, "And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by My name JEHOVAH was I not known unto them." (Exodus 6:3). "I am the LORD".... "I will redeem you..." (vs 6) Jehovah is associated with redemption and salvation. What is His name? "Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Eph. 5:20).
Solomon says: "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain Thee; how much less this house that I have builded? (1 Kings 8:27). Yet, He was present in the Temple because God said: "My name shall be there" (1 Kings 8:29). The fulness of His character is represented by His name. Therefore God was present in the Temple. Then Solomon went on to pray "that all people of the earth may know Thy name" (1Kings 8:43). Therefore Jesus is "God with us", because His name was on Him and it is written: "For it pleased God that in Him should all fulness dwell." (Col. 1:19). "For in Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." (Col. 2:9).
